apple bread

Apple Bread with Cinnamon Topping

This apple bread recipe is a family recipe we make for Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners every year. It’s been passed down from my grandma to my mom, then to me, and now onto you!

When you bake this delicious apple bread, it fills your home with the sweet scent of apple and cinnamon. So it’s a great dessert bread to make before guests come over!

Since my grandma lived in upstate New York, we always use Macintosh apples for this recipe. However, I’m sure you could use any type of apple. You only need a couple to make 1.5 cups of chopped apple.

If you can’t eat it right away, it’s easily frozen in a zip-loc bag. We did that once to bring as a thank you gift to friends hosting us on a road trip. They asked us how long it typically stays fresh. We said: great question, we don’t really know because typically it’s gone within a day or two in our house!

We hope you enjoy this easy to make apple bread recipe.

Ingredients

Bread

3/4 t. baking soda
1 1/2 T. sour milk (add 1/2 t. vinegar to milk)
3/8 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 eggs
1 1/2 cup apple, chopped
1 1/2 cup AP flour
3/8 t. salt
3/4 t. vanilla

Topping

2 T. softened butter
2 T. brown sugar
2 T. flour
3/4 t. ground cinnamon

Instructions

1
Preheat oven to 325. Make sure to chop your apples. I usually cut mine in about 1/2 in pieces, but they can be smaller if you want them to blend in a bit more in the bread.

Our recipe calls for sour milk. You can make this by adding 1/2 t. vinegar to 1 1/2 T. milk in a small bowl. White or apple cider vinegar both work well. Add the baking soda to the sour milk and mix well. Let sit for a few minutes.
3
Cream shortening and sugar in medium bowl. Add eggs one at a time. Add the sour milk mixture and mix well. Add flour, salt, and vanilla and stir to combine. Mix in apples.
4
Pour into greased loaf pan. It’s typically a little thick, so you may need to spread evenly in pan.
5
Combine topping ingredients in a small bowl. It can be fun to use your fingers but it gets messy. Spread mixture over top of dough. Sometimes I like to drop small chunks evenly over the top of the dough.

Bake at 325 for 1 hour, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
